Z, released in 1996, stands out in the realm of real-time strategy games, not just for its succinct single-letter name but also for its innovative approach to the genre. While it shares similarities with classics like Dune 2 and Command & Conquer, Z distinguishes itself with a unique focus on territorial control, offering a fresh take on real-time strategy gameplay.
In Z, the conventional RTS elements of resource harvesting and building construction are notably absent. Instead, the game centers on the strategic occupation of enemy sectors. Capturing a flag within a sector grants players control of that territory and, in turn, access to additional units. This mechanic shifts the focus from resource management to tactical expansion and control, providing a different kind of strategic challenge.
The buildings have the character of production units or defense buildings. Factories produce constantly; the manufactured unit belongs to the one whose flag is raised above the production unit at the moment of completion of the production cycle. In addition to six types of robots, differing in weaponry, stamina and speed, there are several types of vehicles in the game. These have another difference from the classic RTS concept: they require a robot to drive, while the driver can be eliminated without destroying the vehicle, making the vehicle eligible for capture; this rule also applies to operating stationary towers. The goal of the game is to capture or destroy the enemy base, or eliminate all enemy units. The gameplay draws from the 1987 game Nether Earth.
Z's emphasis on territorial control over resource management and construction adds depth to its strategic gameplay. Players need to think several moves ahead, anticipating enemy actions and devising plans to maintain control over the map. This focus on strategic planning and territorial dominance makes Z a compelling and engaging title in the RTS genre.
Z to this day has one very specific problem - it's name is just letter Z and therefor it is very hard to google this name and find some relevant sources :-)
