Over the years, NFS has become legendary in the gaming industry. The Need For Speed games are always graphically attractive and very playable. In 1997, EA released an enhanced version of NFS2, called Need For Speed 2: Special Edition, focusing primarily on graphics enhancements and I must say, the graphics were at their peak at that time. Other new features were added as well, such as 4 new cars (Ferrari F355F1, Ford Mustang Mach III, Italdesign Nazca C2, and Ford Indigo), 3 bonus cars, 1 new track, and new game modes, including the opportunity to drive mirrored or reverse tracks. However, it remained the good old NFS, with all its positive and negative characteristics. Controlling the car is smooth but not entirely simple, so it might take some time to get used to it and avoid crashing into every tree. In the Special Edition, a new game mode called "Wild" was added—here, you can drive at such speeds that other machines would start to fly.

The primary focus of NFS2: SE was on elevating the visual experience, and it succeeded admirably, setting a new benchmark for graphics quality in racing games at the time. The enhancements brought to life the game's varied environments and iconic cars with unprecedented detail, offering players an immersive racing experience that was unrivaled.

In addition to graphical improvements, NFS2: SE expanded the game's roster with the inclusion of four new cars, adding to the diversity and appeal of its vehicle selection. The newly added Ferrari F355F1, Ford Mustang Mach III, Italdesign Nazca C2, and Ford Indigo, alongside three bonus cars, gave players even more options to hit the track with style and power. Moreover, the introduction of a new track and the ability to race on mirrored or reversed versions of existing tracks added fresh challenges and extended the game's replayability.

One of the most exciting features introduced in NFS2: SE was the "Wild" game mode, a testament to the game's emphasis on high-speed thrills. This mode allowed players to push their vehicles to the limit, reaching speeds at which other games' cars would metaphorically start to fly. This addition underscored NFS2: SE's commitment to delivering an exhilarating racing experience that pushed the boundaries of what players expected from the genre.

Despite these enhancements, NFS2: SE maintained the essence of the Need For Speed series, with its blend of smooth yet challenging car handling that required players to master the nuances of each vehicle to avoid becoming too acquainted with the scenery. The learning curve associated with mastering car control added depth to the gameplay, rewarding skill and precision behind the wheel.
