The now legendary 3D racing game Stunts is based on a simple principle - your task is to drive as fast as possible across a track full of various obstacles and jumps without crashing, which usually automatically knocks you out of the game. There are several cars available, a lot of pre-constructed tracks and, most importantly, an editor in which you can build your dream track from a number of construction pieces, or rather a nightmare for those you give it to play. You can also compare your performance with artificial intelligence, which is represented by several riders - each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Graphics run at 320x200 pixels and 256 colors. According to Stunts, several games were later inspired, the most famous being the Trackmania series.
Stunts offers the core experience of a racing game, with players competing to achieve the fastest times on various tracks. The driving mechanics are typical of the era, providing a solid and enjoyable racing experience. While the game's sounds and controls align with the standards of the early '90s, they contribute to an authentic retro gaming feel that can be particularly appealing to fans of classic games.
However, it's the track construction that truly shines in Stunts. Players have the freedom to create wildly imaginative tracks, which can range from realistically challenging to outrageously impossible. This creative freedom not only adds an extra layer of fun but also introduces strategic elements to the gameplay. For instance, players can design tracks that are particularly difficult for the computer-controlled opponents to navigate, giving them a strategic edge in races.
While Stunts may not have groundbreaking graphics or the advanced features of modern racing games, its charm lies in its simplicity and the creative potential of the track-building feature. It's a game that appeals to both racing enthusiasts and those who enjoy a touch of creativity and customization in their gaming experience.
