The King of England is dead, the crown lost and the land divided. You assume the role of one of the Saxon nobles and your task is to expel the Norman usurpers and unite the country. In its time, the game impressed both its graphics and its simplicity and variety at the same time. On the small map of England you can build armies, conquer territory, wage battles or build castles. The game also contains several interludes, namely the conquest of the castle (using a catapult), the action-packed rescue of a kidnapped princess, or a knight's tournament for territory or honor.

Players take on the role of a Saxon lord determined to unite England under their banner and drive out the Norman invaders. The game starts with players choosing their character, each with their strengths in leadership, jousting, or strategy, influencing their approach to the game. The strategic component involves managing lands, gathering armies, and engaging in battles with rival lords for territorial control. The game's map serves as the main interface for these activities, allowing players to plan their next moves, attack neighboring territories, and fortify their castles.

Besides strategy, Defender of the Crown features several mini-games that add variety to the gameplay. Jousting tournaments offer a chance to gain fame and fortune, while castle sieges require players to catapult their way through enemy defenses. Another exciting aspect is the opportunity to lead Robin Hood and his merry men on raids against rich Norman lords, adding an element of adventure and stealth.
