In Robin Hood, you must perform many heroic deeds to change the public impression of you from "villain" to "hero." The ultimate aim is to retake your castle, which is captured in the intro sequence. This involves bringing together your band of merry men and killing the Sheriff and his guards. There are seven extra items you can find in the game, which aren't essential but make the game a lot easier. The whole interface is similar to Populous: you don't direct Robin directly but with icons placed around the screen. The AI citizens of Sherwood go about their lives as normal, so it's another game that you can spend just watching and wandering through rather than trying to complete.

The game takes place in an open world where you have the freedom to explore different locations such as dense forests, villages and Nottingham Castle itself. During your adventures, you as Robin Hood meet various people who can help you, but some can also make your adventure difficult.

The main goal of the game is to rid Nottingham of the sheriff's tyranny and gain support from the locals. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, including hostage rescue, stealing from the rich and distributing loot to the poor, or direct combat with enemies. The interactive world is a key element of the game, where your decisions have a direct impact on the course of the story and the reactions of other characters. For example, if a player decides to help a villager, they can gain a valuable ally or useful information.

The graphics and sound of the game are simple, but they complement the atmosphere of medieval England well. Despite the fact that the game does not have a high graphic standard even for its time, its story and gameplay are engaging and guarantee many hours of fun.
