Game review

The Earth entered a nuclear winter caused by the fall of a meteorite. The titular island has been formed in the Azores group of islands, caused by volcanic activity. Midwinter is a hybrid game that combines elements of strategy and action. The game is a post-apocalyptic first-person action role-playing game with strategy and survival elements for the Atari ST, Amiga and PC. It was designed by Mike Singleton and released in 1989 by Microplay Software.

In 2040, a global catastrophe hit Earth. A meteorite fell in the region of Burma, and a huge amount of dust in the atmosphere caused a major cooling of the entire planet, which is covered with snow and ice. Many plant and animal species have become extinct and the human population is collapsing. Economy, agriculture and politics suddenly lost their meaning. The famine caused the death of many millions of people, and the survivors migrate towards the equator and the island of Midwinter, which was created by volcanic activity around the Azores. Although the island is covered in snow, people are building a new civilization here. Now, in 2099, a despotic group called the General Masters is trying to take control of the island. John Stark, who is the commander of the original order forces on the island, is ambushed and captured by a group of General Masters. After his escape, he warns the rest of the islanders and together they face the invasion...

The player in the role of John Stark moves across the island, looking for other members of his law enforcement unit and civilians, and together they wage a guerrilla war against the General Masters army. At first he is armed only with a few grenades, a sniper rifle and skis, gradually he controls a snowmobile, a snowmobile and a number of other weapons. He eliminates the enemy in the form of individuals and groups, motorized and on foot, from an ambush or direct attack, finally he must destroy the General Masters headquarters and headquarters in the southeast of the island. The game is action from the point of view of John Stark, who sees the vast world of the island in rendered 3D polygons. The environment simulates mountain slopes and flat plains. Relatively free movement in all directions is facilitated by a compass and map of the island. The game uses a timer and simultaneously simulates the operations of up to 32 recruits that John can command.
