Put yourself again in the shoes of the determined head of a family who, like thousands of others, headed for a new life in the 19th century on the west coast of what is now the United States of America. The first settlers began to flow along the Oregon Trail as early as the late 1930s, but it was not until the agreement of June 15, 1846, which gave the United States the disputed territory of the Pacific Northwest south of the 49th parallel, that it became the trigger for the mass migration of thousands of pioneers in covered wagons. The year is 1848, and Oregon has been granted legal status as a territory open to settlers like yourself. Can you and your loved ones make it to the finish line healthy and full?
Ahead of you is a journey of several months through the wilderness full of hardships. Although luck there favors the prepared and ready, at the same time it is still true that chance is a fool. What if your car is struck by lightning, robbed by bandits, lost your wife, or kidnapped by an eagle? A lot of it is preventable and you constantly have to think about whether you will have enough supplies to make it to the next stop at one of the strongholds that are very far from each other. You won't get far at a turtle's pace, ideally you should proceed at least one step at a time, you are crying out for a broken wheel with the pelting of a hare. How many opportunities to hunt, gather berries or pan for gold will you take so that you don't linger too long?
