In Ikari Warriors, players take on the roles of two commandos, Colonel Ralf and Second Lieutenant Clark, who are stranded in a hostile jungle environment. The primary objective is to fight through enemy forces and survive various challenges to reach the village of Ikari. Armed initially with machine guns and a limited supply of grenades, players navigate the battlefield, combating enemy soldiers, tanks, and helicopters.
Game is in top-down perspective, which allows players to move in eight directions across the scrolling landscape. This perspective was innovative at the time and provided a comprehensive view of the battlefield, enhancing the strategic aspect of the game. As players progress, they face increasingly difficult odds, with larger numbers of enemies and more complex terrain. The ability to play cooperatively with another player adds a strategic layer to Ikari Warriors, as players must coordinate their movements and attacks to effectively manage the waves of enemies.
Ikari Warriors also introduced the concept of vehicles to the top-down shooter genre. Players can commandeer enemy tanks, adding an extra layer of firepower and protection. However, the tanks have limited fuel and can be destroyed by enemy attacks, adding a tactical element to their use.
The game's success led to several sequels and established it as a classic in the shooter genre.
